Steve Brannock Helps Lawyers Prepare for Appellate Board Certification Exam
Reprising his longtime role, Brannock Berman & Seider partner Steve Brannock gave a lecture as part of the annual advanced appellate practice and board certification review course, hosted by The Florida Bar’s Appellate Practice Section.
Steve’s presentation about civil appellate practice addressed jurisdiction, finality, preservation of error, procedural rules, the mechanics of filing an appeal, records on appeal, motions practice, standards of review, and just about everything else a lawyer seeking board certification in appellate practice must know. Steve’s in-depth discussion also included extensive written materials spanning almost 100 pages, which have long been cited by experienced appellate practitioners as among the most important for preparing for and passing the challenging certification exam. These materials even serve as a reference for Florida’s appellate courts.
The event, which is the most advanced continuing legal education program offered by the Section, serves as the principal study review course for appellate attorneys planning to take the certification exam. Topics include an overview of the exam specifications and substantive discussions on civil appeals, criminal appeals, administrative appeals, and extraordinary writs. The highly credentialed faculty also discussed significant recent decisions and distinctions between federal and state appeals.
